DS106 Digital Story Compilation

DS106 Digital Story Compilation

Hello everyone!  It is with with great happiness that I share with you my digital story compilation.  Although it doesn’t show every step of my journey, it highlights some of the projects I really enjoyed, freaked out about, and struggled with.  Isn’t that really what life is all about?  Not only is it enjoying the ride, but it’s learning how to face challenges (sometimes we don’t always win), reflecting on how you can improve yourself, and figuring out how to inspire your teammates in the process.  Don’t forget to take some time and look back on your experiences with some satisfaction.

From memes, to GIFs, to FIGs, to tweets-let’s just say  it was easy for me to say that I just wasn’t up to the task.  Maybe I was too intimated or too old to figure things out.  Yet I learned that everyone in our class did  have questions; it wasn’t just me.  That fact helped motivate me.   As my advisor says, the race to graduation isn’t a marathon, it’s a test of stamina.  Here’s hoping you learned as much as me.  I enjoyed working with all of you!

DS106 IMAGES- We’re the Real Life Brady Bunch

We’re the Baker Bunch!

After some consideration, I decided to work on the Brady Bunch assignment.  Most of my family members aren’t around this week, so the “That 70’s Show Circle” project was out!  As you probably noticed, I couldn’t resist the last name alliteration, so I went with it.  I struggled with the amount of people/dogs versus the spaces available.  We have four dogs in the family and I wanted them all represented.  I eventually settled with adding a small Baker Bunch sign in between the squares, rather than in the middle.

This project was fun to put together.  I would say the most difficult piece was deciding which pictures to add and trying to get them to a similar scale.  In order to create the entire piece, I used a combination of BeFunky Collage Maker, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Paint.  BeFunky was a great application to work with.  I was able to easily resize my photos within the collage and flip the photos, as I wanted to mirror the Brady Bunch effect where some people are looking around the square.   I took a screenshot when complete, pasted it into Word, and cropped it down.  I also used Word to recreate the Brady Bunch lettering/font as much as possible. I was able to screenshot the picture again to include the sign and saved it as a jpg.

DS106 WEB-Color Walk Time Lines

The DS106 WEB-Color Walk Time Line project instructions stated to select a color and then take a 20 minute walk, while taking pictures of objects of that color.  I took my walk on Friday morning, which was glorious weather-wise.  Although there were colors of purple and pink (mainly lilacs and rhododendrons) throughout my neighborhood, I chose the less vibrant color-white.  I think that as a whole people tend to overlook items that are white because we perceive the color to be mundane.  So I took the time to re-open my eyes and focus on observing the white objects, which contrasted extremely well with the vast amount of green colors in the environment.  Besides typical flowers, I found rocks, architecture, and garden ornaments and attempted to capture their images in different ways.  I encourage you to take a stroll with me by viewing my timeline and take a look for yourself…

As you can see, I did experience an issue with the process though.  I was able to get the hang of the Google Spreadsheet rather quickly once I viewed a YouTube instructional video and generating it from Timeline JS.  However, once the embed code was produced my major issue was importing the timeline into WordPress.  After a couple hours of troubleshooting, I unfortunately had to hyperlink the timeline to my page.

DS106 Demotivate Yourself

This demotivational message took me a long time to create.  I don’t typically view many memes (with the exception of Office Space memes, which if you understand the context are the most accurate I have run across) and those aren’t usually demotivational in nature.  I believe that when you view a multitude of memes, like my daughters do on a daily basis, they are easier to design.  I knew from the beginning that I wanted to create this meme with an image that I had taken versus an image bank.  Therefore, this meme was created from a two year old picture of my daughter Cara, who is standing in front of a Justice League movie promotional cutout inside the Saco Cinemagic lobby.  Just as a reference point, each member of our family had a picture taken with the cutouts separately, posing seriously and heroically as if we were a team member of the Justice League.  However, when it was time to take Cara’s picture, she decided that her fragrant, buttery popcorn was more interesting than any superhero pact.  Who can resist freshly made popcorn?

That is what made this image stand apart for me and it makes me laugh every time.

DS106 Images-Selfie with Your Pet

Selfie with Your Pet

The “Selfie with Your Pet” assignment was challenging.  You see, I have more than one pet, and I couldn’t showcase one over the other.  Try placing two small dogs in your lap at the same time after they have been riled up playing ball, then squeezing in to fit the entire group within the iPhone’s camera range.  That doesn’t even include successfully prompting the dogs to look in the direction of the camera.  It took me many attempts!  I have recently discovered that the quality of selfies are all about arm length, and I am severely limited in that regard!

My two dogs are Sofie, a long-haired chihuahua from New Mexico, and Sirius Black (Harry Potter fans, you know what I’m talking about), a terrier mix from the southern U.S.   They both originated from rough backgrounds before we adopted them from the animal shelter.  Sofie is anxious around people, especially those wearing baseball caps. Sirius has been shot numerous times by a bb gun.  He still has some pellets in his skin.  They have gradually adjusted to Maine climates, and although they resent snow, they will now walk in it.  We have been excited to see signs of trust and love from them as time progresses.  Now Sofie and Sirius regularly prompt us to cuddle them and rub their bellies;  we are thrilled to comply.  That’s what true owner-pet love is all about!

DS106 What’s the meme?

DS106: What’s the meme?

I was in search for an amazing image for the meme project, so I started my task by scrolling through the picture library of my iPhone.  Then I found it…the picture that resulted from a hilarious moment that I had almost forgotten.  My family and I had just finished watching an evening movie last summer at Cinemagic.  We were walking through the parking lot when we spotted this van with a plethora of bumper stickers.  In our neighborhood you might see someone that has a conservative amount of bumper stickers, maybe 2-3 at the most, but never over 10.  At that amount, it is as if the driver is sharing his/her values to the world via a megaphone.   I will say that at first we were speechless, viewing the sheer amount of bumper stickers that plastered the back.  After only a few seconds, we collectively embarked upon the guilty pleasure of trying to read them all.  My husband and I, true Gen X-ers, greedily spotted all of the snarky pearls of wisdom and appreciated the obvious display of Ghostbusters, Big Lebowski, LOTR and Futurama fandom.  Chrissy and Cara, our daughters, also caught most of the sarcasm, but I feel it was most appreciated by a member of Gen X.  I remember taking the picture and then regaling it to my friends and co-workers the next day because it was so strikingly amusing.  I realized that this morning that it was a great meme option to share with everyone.
