DS 106 Turn a GIF into a FIG

Turning a GIF into a FIG

I know what you may be thinking, but these are not trick birthday candles!  This FIG is a labor of love and exasperation!  Yesterday, I had already designated this assignment as a piece of “cake” (groan), but it was one of my most challenging so far.  Although boasting of its reverse GIF option, the GIPHY app would not process my GIF properly when I uploaded it, even when I ensured that the movie file was within their size specifications.  So, after some experimentation and Googling to no avail, I eventually downloaded the ImgPlay app hours later.   ImgPlay allowed me to upload a GIF with the reverse action.  However, it was not that easy…the application did not provide a url to embed inside of WordPress.  It only offered to share the GIF via different social media platforms.  So I saved the GIF that ImgPlay had processed on my laptop,  then ran it through GIPHY in order to obtain the url to imbed.

I was hoping to add a bit more footage in the video showing Cara blowing out all of the candles, but due to file size, I resorted to a shortened version.  I thought it the whole effect looked really neat, as if she was blowing fire and lighting the candles.

DS106 ANIMATED GIF-Home Video GIF

Home Video GIF-Helicopter Flip

It’s the season for those pesky helicopter seeds.  You know, the ones that scatter off of the oak trees.  They are everywhere right now!  Well, ever since we have owned a trampoline, my daughter, Cara, asks us to take a video of her flipping around with the helicopter seeds rising all around her.  I filmed this video yesterday.  She wasn’t too happy when I told her that I was making one of these videos a GIF, but oh well…I guess that’s parental privilege!  So at first, I uploaded the video in GIPHY and was toying around with different filters, but finally opted to go with the normal setting.  All the other filters seemed to take attention away from the action.  I originally contemplated using a sticker that said, “Look at this”.   It just didn’t seem to fit though.  So I decided to utilize a technique that has been helping me write my blog topics.  Study the image first and then pull out the text.  So I decided the wording, “helicopter flip” was most fitting.  I also chose the wavy meme text because I felt like it complemented the motion of the trampoline.  I wish there was a flip text option-that might have been ideal!

DS106 SAY IT LIKE THE PEANUT BUTTER

I was dreading this DS 106 project, but after creating my first GIF I can now say that I am addicted!  I would love to experiment and make a dozen more (if I didn’t have so much homework).  Honestly, I didn’t know how easy the process was to create one; it is the time involved finding the clever angle that sets one back.  One of my favorite movies is The Phantom of the Opera.  At first I was looking for something humorous, but when I took the movement portion of the assignment in account, I realized that one of the most pivotal moments of the movie is when Christine unmasks the Phantom, revealing his scars and his soul.  I decided to use that scene as the inspiration for my first GIF creation. I realize that the movement within this GIF was supposed to be minimal, however an unmasking does involve quite a bit of motion.  Nevertheless, I tried to whittle away as much as I could.  I also thought it was important to show a tiny reaction from the Phantom.  For this assignment, I first tried using GIFs.com.  I found that after completion it stamps its logo on the GIF, so I scrapped it and restarted using giphy.com. which worked just as easily without the annoying branding.
